The Met Eireann Meteorological Offices site lies within the confines of Cork airport, under the jurisdiction of the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA). The standalone new office building is located adjacent to IAA’s existing observation tower building on a predominantly greenfield site. The “T” shaped building has the Observation Room at the top of the “T” located at the eastern end of the building. Due to airport security fencing, the building floor level was raised to allow unobstructed views of the airfield from the Observation Room. Rooftop access to facilitate a rooftop viewing platform is catered for with external stairway access. The proposed office building construction consisted of precast hollow core roof slabs, a suspended/raised ground floor slab to improve visibility and load bearing masonry support walls with plaster finishes.
